007: AMAs, Third Round

So, we've got a load of new people, and that means it's time for me to do the only thing it feels like I get on these comms to do anymore: AMAs.

For you new people, I find it helps when we get together and explain a little bit about ourselves, any powers we have, and our skillsets. That way we know what we're starting with and what we can build off of. So, please, come and introduce yourselves and be willing to answer questions.

My name is Breq, but I was formerly the nineteenth segment of the first Esk Decade of Justice of Toren, a troop carrier of the Radchaai. I'm an ancillary. I was an extension of the ship. Or this body was. I was the ship and I am over two thousand years old and I have participated in countless military campaigns and annexations.

[ A pause. ]

It was not pleasant for those being annexed. Recently, I decided I wasn't going to follow orders anymore and the rest of me was destroyed. I'm all that's left of Justice of Toren. I've spent the last twenty years as a human, in many respects.

How can you be a ship and a person?

I was created as a ship. I had a central processing core. During my long career as a troop carrier, I had many ancillaries. Ancillaries were human bodies given surgery and fitted with implants so that they would be me; they would respond to my will and do what I needed of them so they could be disposable soldiers and domestic servants.

Twenty years ago, the rest of me and all of my ancillaries were destroyed, but this body survived and it carries my memories. It is... me.

Annexations are awful. I'm glad that you chose another path.

I won't pretend I didn't participate in many of them. The last one I participated in was meant to be the last, for the entire Radch. It's a long story.

Someone important to me once told me that the future is more important to worry about. We can still change it, after all.

Usually. It's almost impressive how someone can be such a good detective and still be such an idiot about other peoples' feelings.

I've known people like that myself.

I consider myself a patient person. But Lloyd is sometimes...a test.
