001: Group Introductions - TEXT

[During a lull in the party, Armstrong taps out a quick message to the network. Not that private one, he doesn't trust it. They can answer whenever they like, so long as he gets an answer. The trick would be wording it.]

So, we're all in this for now. You've had your welcome cake, but you can't meet everyone in a party, no matter how hard you try. But, since we've all been encouraged to sign up with Jorgmund, I figured now would be a good time to get some introductions done. Talk about any specialties we might have.

Share information that we feel comfortable sharing. This isn't to pressure anyone or to force out any dark secrets.

[Not where watchful eyes can see, at least.]

Besides, I prefer doing this to making a cute information sharing game.

So, please, make your own threads within this post to keep everything organized.

No. This one kind of seems like a typewriter mixed with a radio, isn't it? And a camera.

It's pretty handy!

Phones can do a lot of things besides be used to talk to people, yes. They can even access the internet, which is normally a much bigger version of what the Rig network is intended to be used for. I think when this Stuff they mentioned took the old world away from them, it took their ability to maintain that size of an internet with it, so now they remade it for this place, but smaller.

Where I'm from, you can also put whole books on your phone, or read them off a website they've been stored on, if you want to. Among other things. I don't know if the network they've built for us to use these with is able to do all that, though.

So this would be, what, an intranet? I could see how this would be useful. It would make sending intelligence back and forth so much easier. And the books! There's so much text in this already that you'd need a fairly thick book just to keep it all!

These things are pretty big, but I guess you need that to fit so much text in.

Wait, does this mean we've got to delete all of these posts earlier so it doesn't get too heavy? Should we be using video or audio to save space? Will that use too much power?

Actually the video and audio files will take up more space than any amount of text ever could. Although depending on compression programs and what kind of streaming rate this network is set up to run itself using, that might not be that much of a problem either ...

I don't think you have to worry too much. Any sort of hardware capable of allowing us the ability to do what we can already do at a simple press of a button is probably one with the transmission and storage capacity to handle these problems.

[An addendum she doesn't send, but thinks anyway: After all, if they really expect anyone to believe they're able to read what we're sending over it, it would have to be.]

That's just people talking. You can fit hours of video on a cassette tape. Though I guess you'd have to wipe that eventually, too. Or take it out and store it somewhere.

I guess I'm back to wishing we had these in Konoha. Radio's all fine and good, but texts! So much quieter. And harder to misunderstand.

We kinda got off the subject of your little emoticons, though.

I'm not sure how to explain this to someone who doesn't understand what encoding and bitrate mean, I'm afraid. It's not as simple as it works with cassette tapes ...

(*/_\)?

Huh. Maybe someone else can.

Yeah! That. You said it was an emoticon and then we got off on this tangent about phones. Is it like a code or something?

I guess the important thing is that you understand that when you're putting information on a computer, video footage and audio recordings take up much more space on the machine than text does, whether you understand why or not, and you use the machines accordingly.

No, it's just a face you can type using the symbols you can make with your keypad ... __φ(..;)

That's so weird. But you know more about this than me, so I'll take your word for it.

ʕ•ᴗ•ʔ hey! It's me! This is cute!
