001: Group Introductions - TEXT

[During a lull in the party, Armstrong taps out a quick message to the network. Not that private one, he doesn't trust it. They can answer whenever they like, so long as he gets an answer. The trick would be wording it.]

So, we're all in this for now. You've had your welcome cake, but you can't meet everyone in a party, no matter how hard you try. But, since we've all been encouraged to sign up with Jorgmund, I figured now would be a good time to get some introductions done. Talk about any specialties we might have.

Share information that we feel comfortable sharing. This isn't to pressure anyone or to force out any dark secrets.

[Not where watchful eyes can see, at least.]

Besides, I prefer doing this to making a cute information sharing game.

So, please, make your own threads within this post to keep everything organized.

[ Cayde reads that. He's quiet for just a moment. ]

Thanks... Setsuna?

[ That's the name written here, but it always feels a little weird using someone's name without actually going through the introduction process. ]

text on her end, sorry, should've been clear

Yes. That is my given name. (*´-`*) You're welcome, I hope ...

(シ_ _)シ I've talked to Saint-14 a little; he's very forthcoming. I didn't mean to overstep and I apologize if I have.

it's cool, got it from the fonting!

[ Cayde waves a hand a little. ]

It's fine. Nothing he would've said is a big secret, I'm used to not having to explain any of it.

[ People know about Exos. People know about Ghosts. Those things are just true of anyone who grows up in the City, and true by the time even the greenest of Hunters lands in front of him. ]

A dead Ghost is just personal.

[ He hasn't said it out loud in such frank terms yet. Maybe that's part of a process of some kind, he muses. But there it is: Sundance is dead. He supposes that if she's talked to Saint, it all falls together. Have a job where you need something reviving you, lose that revival mechanism, where does it leave you? ]

I understand.

[More than he knows, and more than she's comfortable saying over text, in public.]

I wish I could do more than offer sympathy. I could ask you more about the people of the City, if that might help. I have many questions about it but it felt rude to ask them all of Saint-14 at once.

[ Cayde's relaxed demeanor becomes a little more genuine as they move off talking about his Ghost. It's not that Cayde doesn't appreciate the kindness being extended, it's that it bothers him when other people think he needs it. This? This is much easier. ]

That? I can help with that. Been cooped up in the City so much these days that I should be an expert by now.

[Oh good, that's the reaction she was hoping for ...!]

What's it like, living there? Does the Traveler speak to any of you, or ...?

It's not a bad place. Humanity's worked damn hard to get itself a home with walls to keep the Fallen out. And the Cabal now too, and anything else ugly that decides it's gonna land on Earth.

The Traveler... well. Until not too long ago it was... comatose? Not an expert on the cognitive states of mysterious sky orbs here. But we had a man we called the Speaker who represented it. That gets into an intersection of faith and politics that's probably a bit hairy for casual conversation, though.

[ Cayde shrugs. ]

All told, I was happiest outside shooting bad guys and taking their stuff. But that's just the kind of guy I am.

Is everyone in the City a Guardian like you and Saint-14? And are all Guardians robot-like people, too? It sounds like it might help keep everyone safer if they were.

Comatose? Oh my. It is probably best if I don't ask for too many details, it might be too difficult to explain over the network, then? But I would like to learn more about it, nonetheless. You and Saint-14 describe it in ways that sound familiar to me, but I wonder if that's really accurate.

And now you're here, instead, on this much smaller Rig with the rest of us ...

We have ourselves a fair few Guardians, but most people are the garden variety kind. Guardians are all human of one stripe or another, me and Saint are just Exos.

[ Cayde leans back in his seat, thinking. ]

I'm not used to having to explain about Exos, you take that one for granted in the City. We're as human as anybody, but you might say we've got a prosthetic everything. Some tech wiz figured out transferring minds into robots a long time ago. Don't ask me how, can't remember it. None of us does. Exos don't as a rule, and Guardians don't remember what happened before we died.

[ He waves a hand a little as if tossing all the things he can't remember over his shoulder. It's in the past, it's fine, he doesn't need to talk about it and that's obviously perfect. He clearly doesn't have any ugly bits and pieces he's dug up or held onto to complicate things. ]

Being a Guardian doesn't have much to do with it, it's just what I was already when my Ghost picked me up the first time. You know. Aside from dead.

[ He reads. Next question? Next question. ]

I'm a Hunter, so my grip on things with the Traveler and the Light is a bit... applied theory, and by applied theory I mean explosions and fun not-dying tricks, but it seems like we'll have some time around here if you wanna talk about it.

[ And speaking of time, and here... Cayde's shoulders sink and he sighs. ]

And you said it. I'm not claustrophobic, but if I'm cooped up somewhere for too long I start pulling out all my feathers. So to speak. They better not be lying to me about how much they're gonna need us to go out and do things.

So being a "Hunter" is also something different from being a "Guardian", and an "Exo", like how someone can be a specific kind of chef and also from a specific place of origin? I apologize, I am sure this makes sense in context. These are just unfamiliar terms and I would like to be precise and respectful about them. I want to use them correctly.

I assume we will find out if they are lying about anything relatively quickly, although I choose to believe they are sincere about what they intend to do with us in any case ...

That's mostly right. A Hunter's a specialization. All Hunters are Guardians, not all Guardians are Hunters. That's what I am, but Sainty's a Titan. We've also got Warlocks, but whatever's responsible for dragging us all in here hasn't seen fit to pick up one of them.

[ As for the rest, a nod. ]

Wish I could have faith they mean it about helping people out. I'm willing to do it, just expecting to be disappointed.

Do you wish one of them was here?

I guess I just don't know what else to do except take them at their word, even if they keep trying to make it hard to. I just don't know anything about the world beyond this Rig, yet, to feel comfortable doing anything else.

To be honest, no.

[ A beat, more thoughtful. ]

Well... Sort of.

[ Then he shakes his head, firmly. ]

Dammit, no, definitely not. They've got other things to be doing. Would I appreciate the Warlock expertise, especially considering we don't know what's out there and it's bound to be weird? Yeah, but I'd rather the City not be down another Guardian.

Besides. It's not exactly the kind of place you'd wish a friend into, right?

No, I suppose it isn't. Not even for all that you might miss them anyway, that isn't something anyone should demand of anyone, just for feeling lonely.
